My workspace

22 Nov

I decided to start seriously decorating my room. I’ve lived here for four years already (moved in November 2005) and I haven’t done anything special with my room.

I have a little list of things I want to do here which include:

  • Paint current furniture white
  • Re-upholster couch pink or purple / Buy a new one
  • Get rid of extra bed
  • Get rid of wallpaper

And so on…

I decided to start with the easiest one: Paint current furniture white. I did that yesterday, I spent my morning with white paint getting my desk to look decent. The gray and black was depressing and it looked so old that I could barely feel productive in it. Until recently it was just a tabletop to place my laptop while it was off.

So I got a new chair (took it from my sister’s unused office with her permission) and waited until the two coats of pain dried up.

This is how it looks:

White + uncluttered, I love it! I totally have a landline :P .

A little beer cooler I got at Sun in Silicon Valley. You can see my pens, mini tripod and memory stick adapter.

Those boxes I found in my mother’s closet. They hold notebooks and cables.

I didn’t do the best paint job ever but it looks so much better! I actually feel productive while sitting here.

Are you good with DIYs?

Huuuge post!!

21 Nov

This week was so busy I can’t even begin to tell you. So I’m going to try my best at documenting some stuff that happened ok?

It all started on Tuesday (Monday was a national holiday, so no school!!), I woke up at an ungodly hour to be able to go to a conference about Flash for iPhone at UIA. Now, UIA is really not tat far away from my college but the traffic to get there is just CRAZY!! We ended up arriving at 9:30 instead of 9 because of that.

DSC01722Shana Pol and I on Javi’s car.

The conference was good. It was directed at designers so we did snicker at some programming things because they are not THAT hard for us. It was fun n_n. On our way back Shana Pol and I rode with V (our programming evangelist / professor / buddy), then I changed my clothes for our projects presentation and went to class.

Once in class, I didn’t pay much attention. I always get nervous before thesis presentation, and this one was a big one. So yeah… after that I met up with the Mecatronics and we hung out while the other teams finished their presentations (we were second). After a while we started getting really nervous so Alekz, L and I went upstairs to wait for our turn and in the meantime PC, Chuy and Chon were presenting. They were asked to step out after their presentation to be graded and PC was feeling awful. Poor thing :( . We talked a bit, he’s soo cute, even when he’s sick.

It was our turn and we did awesome! The presentation went by in a jiffy and we totally aced it! I was really happy n_n. The Mecatronics aced too and Jerry and I got crêpes to celebrate! I had soo much fun with them :D .

The day was not over for me… I still had to sit my Information Security practical. I was in the team with Alekz and Shana Pol. Five hours later we finished, printed everything and our Professor told us that it al seemed good. I really hope it is good because that little exam is 30% of our final grade.

On Wednesday I went to school at my usual hour (9 am). I ended up in a traffic jam which made me very late. I barely made it into the classroom when Javi tells me: “We have oral exam now!”. Oral exam? I didn’t even study! My notes are complete crap and I barely know the subject that we are studying!! Oh God! Oh God! Javi went in first and I was madly reviewing my notes (the few ones that I have), then it was my turn. The professor asked me very easy questions and the ones I had wrong he took as right because “you don’t study telecommunications”. I got an A on that as well n_n. What a relief!

On my next class I did a little presentation and left early because I had to go to a congress at the Military School of Engineers (Escuela Militar de Ingenieros). We went along with V and Carmen, they were going to give lectures and Alekz and I were tech support XDD, which means that we passed slides and showed some demos.

That place is impressive. This is te ceiling of the room the conferences were given:

DSC01728It is blurry because I have a very unsteady hand :P .

The room was huge and the militia were incredibly well behaved and made interesting questions. Before we went in to help, they fed us a very lovely meal in the most elegant dinning room ever! It all was very beautiful and the food was delicious. We had lunch with the sub-director of the School and some other important looking people.

The lectures were really good, we had some technical issues but nothing major. At the end, we were approached by the students (it was AWESOME), who asked a lot of questions about our projects. I really didn’t know how to answer a lot of them but it felt really great. It literally made me feel on top of the world.

Oh yeah!

I don’t remember much of it because it all has been a blur. This week made me realize that I’m doing something that is worthwhile and that I really am on the right path to… something. I don’t know it all has been so exciting, but still I want this to end and maybe sleep for three days.

A quickie one

19 Nov

Today I was going to the Cafeteria to have lunch with Lau. As per usual, outside the cafeteria there is a stand about some product. This week, the stands were from Ciel (Bottled water brand by Coca~Cola) and the cool thing was that if you came and gave a water bottle (empty or full) they would give you a 1lt Ciel Bottle. Which is a very sweet deal if you ask me.

Today the dynamic was different, this time you had to buy a bottle and come in with your receipt, then punch a balloon and get a marked paper and you could get THIS!!!

DSC01774

It is a Messenger bag made from a used Airplane tire!!

DSC01775

“It used to be an airplane tire.”

I thought it was sooooo cool!! I mean, it smells like tire but still. How cool is that? It was $13 MXN (like $1 USD) and it can totally carry my laptop.

I think it is a win win for all of us n_n.

I’m going to be MIA for the next 3 weeks. I have finals and final projects coming up so, yeah, it’s going to be horrible. Wish me luck!

I want the semester to end! Please!

14 Nov

I can honestly say that this has been the most stressful semester ever. I tell you now kids… DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TAKE 7 SUBJECTS AND DO THESIS AND SOCIAL SERVICE AT ONCE!

I think that I’ve got it easy though. My thesis is in teams of three and I have to say that my team pretty much rocks. We all work and we all pay our part of everything. Yeah, we have our little fights but what team doesn’t fight once in a while? On our next stage of the project, we got our spiders to move, multiply and increase in size! It’s awesome! I wish you could all see it but right now everything is kind of secret and a bit tangled up.

I recently did a presentation on ITIL. It was boring as hell and I didn’t get a thing. The professor interrupted us a lot because he had to explain what we had to explain. It was a complete disaster… I did get a bit by the end but overall it was a total train wreck. To make matters worse C and I were teamed up with this guy that just thinks out of this world. I bet he’s an Aquarius :P , Aquarius have that kind of out of this world thinking thing. He really does get on my nerves… *shudder shudder*.

The brother, C, R and I have to make an online store as our final project for our e-commerce class. The deadline is in two weeks time and yes, I’m freaking out… a lot. I trust the boys but I really get anxious about deadlines. I seriously need to stop obsessing so much about time. I mean, it’s good to be punctual but it’s not good when you yell at your friends because of a deadline. That is not cool at all :/ and, yes, I’m guilty of doing that.

On Monday I got to use Alekz’ big-ass laptop. I like it but not all the time. I mean the huuuge screen is cool and everything but I don’t know, it’s too big for me. I’d like that big of a screen on a desktop. For laptops I’m totally fine with my 14.5 inch screen. But movies in his laptop pfff, they look A-W-E-S-O-M-E.

Yesterday I had an OCD attack. I had just come back from college (it was like 5:30 pm) and I looked around my room and saw my desk, my couch and my desk full of stuff. I had to clean! So I put all my clothes away (unorganized, that is going to be another episode) and got a trash bag and threw away all the papers and wrappings that I didn’t need anymore. It took me like 3 hours to clan everything (I kept getting distracted) and when I was almost finished with the desk… I noticed a lot of dust on it. I wanted to go downstairs for cleaning supplies but my dog was asleep and he’s a very light sleeper and putting him to bed again, no thanks. So I made do with I had, which was a rag and alcohol. I cleaned it up a bit. Today, I woke up and got my cleaning solution and scrubbed my desk clean, yes, it felt much better that way n_n.

Talking about yesterday, when I was running around having a complete freak out, I saw amplifiers and microphones set up outside the lab. Then I saw Jerry and Teddy Bear carrying equipment and I went to ask them what was up. It turns out that they were going to play as the closing for the Mecatronic something. They were really good and Jerry rocked out! Teddy Bear almost passed out because of his nerves but he sang just fine. Abi was recording everything and I was really excited about the whole thing. It was totally worth it spending 2 more hours at school just to see them play.

So next week:

  • Projects Second Presentation
  • iPhone workshop
  • Military congress
  • Apache Web Server Presentation
  • Second NPP partial
  • Practical Final for CCNA Security

Oh yeah, coffee is my best friend now.

I’ve been getting really into Glee. I love it! Have you seen it? Who is your favourite? On that same note, what’s your favourite TV show?

Hallowe’en 2009

01 Nov

I can honestly say that this Hallowe’en has been the best one ever!! I got to dress up and hang out with my boys, what can be better than that?

But before we get into that let me give you a little update. Other than my schoolwork, things have been quite slow around here. I got my lights back on Sunday and then on Friday had another turn off because of a storm. Streets were completely flooded and it was horrible, luckily it wasn’t by my place… I think it’s one of the perk of living on top a hill and in the middle of a forest (the forest thing is loosely used a lot, I don’t really live in the middle of the woods, my neighborhood is located where a forest used to be and there’s still a bit of forest around, along with some raccoons). Anywhoo apart from the lack of electricity and general homework I’ve been fine n_n.

So, yesterday we all gathered at Shana Pol’s for a costume party!!!

Here’s what I wore:

DSC01409

  • Sequined dress from eBay
  • Black opaque ripped tights
  • H&M boots
  • Loads of necklaces and bangles

I was supposed to be Effy Stonem from Skins, I don’t know if I got it quite right… anyways I loooved my make up.

DSC01408

I used this YouTube tutorial to do it because, let’s face it, I’m not good with make up at all :P .

I made my way to Shana Pol’s armed with soda and without my trusty “drug vial” T_T. I got there and saw:

DSC01412

Not one, but TWO!!!! Abbaths from Immortal

Nacho and GeNmA HAAAD to be the ones that repeated costumes, how random is that? I mean, it’s common to see two Jokers and two MJs but two Abbaths?? Only these two, I swear XDDD. I liked GeNmA’s wig and Nacho’s make up XDD.

DSC01430

OMG! A Beatle, Effy Stomen(Region 4*) and the Nostalgia Critic!!

Alekz dressed as an old school Beatle and Shana Pol was The Nostalgia Critic, in case you don’t know the Nostalgia Critic, here’s one of his videos:

There were other costumes like Javi’s, he was a pirate XDD and everyone wanted to touch him and not in a good way XDD.

DSC01413

Then we had others that I don’t know who they were… Sorry, I’m not that good at geek culture :/.

DSC01414

DSC01436

There are more pictures! You can see them here.

I hope you all had a Happy Hallowe’en n_n!

* Region 4 refers to the DVD viewing regions. Mexico’s is Region 4 so I’m a Mexican Effy Stonem XDD.
