My take on negative comments

I don’t really receive negative comments. My blog is not that famous. The comments I usually get are from my friends, both IRL and online.

However, I very rarely get a comment that is nasty. It usually rants about my appearance, fashion sense, writing style, geekyness and how I should just “get someone to end my poor existence already”. At first it stings, as any blogger can tell you, getting nasty comments leaves you with a very bad after taste, that’s why I just delete and ban the IP after I read them.

After I get over the bad after taste (during the deleting and banning), I think one thing only: “Oh man, I’m popular!”. You see, people who write negative comments have to do at least three things before commenting:

  1. Find you: That’s right, before someone can comment negatively, they have to find your website. Which means that you are reaching people! You are becoming popular!
  2. Read your content: My last negative comment came from page 4 on my blog. This person skimmed over 4 pages of content before they decided that they couldn’t stand me. But they read 4 pages! 4! I don’t think that many people do that, at least not in my blog.
  3. Write the actual comment: Which also includes thinking about a fake name, email address and website. That takes like 2 minutes of time plus the 3 minutes it takes to write the comment and click the send button. People dedicate that time to you, so you must be getting relevant for them to react so strongly against you.

So yeah, wen I get a negative comment I feel popular and relevant. I don’t see the point in them but creating a negative comment does take time and effort of the people who do it. Yes, they might say extremely nasty things but they can also include clever Chuck Norris references and links to inappropriate websites.

With that said, I just want everyone to know that negative comments will be spammed, deleted and banned. I don’t like having those types of comments being published here, that’s why I started to moderate all my comments, all of them.

What’s your take on negative comments?

Kisses,

Julie.

  3. Wow. That is really, really lame, and I’m sorry that you’ve had to endure such ridiculous nastiness, Julie!

Personally, I don’t understand people who can be bothered to write negative comments: you’re right, it takes SO much effort to actually put one together, and to me that’s just a complete waste of time – if you dislike somebody or their work that intensely, really, why bother?!

Totally lame! Seriously, I think that everyone has better things to do than writing hate comments. But what can you do?

  5. Hola Juliette!!,

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo. Las criticas deben de ser contructivas y no ofensivas.

    Todo el apoyo!! Buen día.

Gracias Ricardo! Los comentarios ofensivos son una total pérdida de tiempo y energía.

  6. I agree 100%! I like to look at negative comments as flattery, in a warped way, too. They took time out of their lives to talk to ME! I made a difference in their lives! Thehehe

That was my point! they took the time from the busy lives to tell you how much they don’t like you. You should have had some big impact on them.
